The Year of Jubilee – Part 2 of 2

These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:

“Not one of his bones will be broken.” (John 19:36 NIV)

As mentioned from Part 1 of this blog, the real situation that we were in before the beginning of time is compared to a debt that is impossible to pay. Therefore, it was God who made a way to cancel our debts.

We were completely forgiven—we were cleansed and purified by the blood of the Lamb.

We will now see another prophecy fulfilled as a result of this message of forgiveness. As mentioned in the Scripture, the Lord Jesus’s side was pierced, and not one of His bones was found broken.

From the side of our body, we can find our ribs, and this again reminds us of the story of Adam and Eve as narrated by the following passage:

So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. (Genesis 2:21–24 NIV)

From this passage we can see that God took one of the man’s ribs, which signifies that there is a broken or missing bone. The man is Adam, and from one of his ribs, the woman Eve was formed.

As mentioned in the Scripture, the man, Adam, represents the Lord Jesus Christ, while the wife, Eve, represents the Church (God’s chosen people), and the prophecy states that the two shall become one.

The broken or missing bone is a message of separation—Eve was separated from Adam.

This represents that the Church was actually one with the Lord Jesus before the beginning of time (from eternity past before the creation of the world) but was separated because of rebellion.

Because of God’s great mercy and unconditional love for us, He made a promise that the two shall again become one.

To fulfill this promise, He needed to make the supreme sacrifice so that our sins would be forgiven and all our debts would be cancelled.

To give emphasis to this supreme sacrifice, let us read the following passage:

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. (Ephesians 5:31 NIV)

God is one—this is the perfect union of God the Father, the Lord Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

In order to save His beloved chosen people, the Lord Jesus needed to die. And to die means He had to leave God the Father—the first and only moment in eternity that the perfect union was broken—an indescribable, unspeakable, and unimaginable scene that required the greatest sacrifice of all.

The Lord Jesus can never die if He is in union with the Source of life.

At the cross He was stripped of His deity, and all His connections with God the Father were cut off. As a result, He suffered and died not only physically but also spiritually—He tasted the torments of hell for three days and three nights, as described by Scripture saying: “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

He was able to bear this supreme sacrifice (a man will leave his father) because it would result in the Church being united with Him (and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh)—the fulfillment of the prophecy and of God’s promise that was made before the beginning of time.

When the Lord Jesus died on the cross with all the elements required for cleansing and purification present, the Lord’s time for canceling debts had been proclaimed. After that, there was no broken rib found when the Lord Jesus’s side was pierced.

This represents that because we are now completely forgiven, the prophecy of becoming one (God and His chosen people) has now also been fulfilled.

Let us read the following passage:

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. (Ephesians 5:29–32 NIV)

The phrase “and the two will become one flesh” speaks of two things:

(1) A man and a woman joined together in marriage
(2) The Lord Jesus and the Church also joined together in marriage
